Olympic gold medalist passed on the baton of success to pupils at Silverdale Primary Academy when he paid a visit on Monday 18th June.

Jason, who won a gold medal in the 4x4 100 metres relay at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and is also the 2004 World Indoor Champion at 60 metres, was guest of honour at the schools official opening of its new playground equipment.

The new equipment includes a double-sided climbing wall, installed last month in support of the schools physical education programme, as well as a den building/craft area, where pupils can produce their own creations from a variety of different materials.

Explained Headteacher Lindi Nejrup:

"We launched a school council earlier this year, featuring two pupils from Years 1 to 6, asking them what improvements they would like to see. These latest changes are the direct result of that, with more to come in future, demonstrating our commitment to providing an education with character.”

And on the 18th, champion sprinter Jason, who is a sports ambassador for academy sponsor United Learning, helped declare the area officially open, as well as taking part in a special assembly and workshops with the older pupils, highlighting the role his teachers (right back to primary school) and coaches played in his success.

Added Mrs Nejrup:

"Everyone at the school was keen to welcome Jason and hear his stories of sporting success. The children carefully planned what to ask him, as well as undertaking a range of activities to see what they could do in under 10 seconds.
